My review is going to be geared to those who have owned previous Garmin units, and perhaps have several year old models. I have had a Street Pilot c550 and a 205W. I was never happy with either the screen brightness or the volume on the Street Pilot. When I bought the 205W it was a new model and promised a very bright screen and loud directions – it had neither. Still, I used it until about two months ago, when for no reason it suddenly dumped all my saved destinations. Swell. I figured it was time for a new unit, and I wanted Lane Assist and Junction View. Was originally going to buy another unit that has the feature where it will help you get back to your parked car, but that unit isn’t going to be available for an unknown period of time, so I settled on the 1450lmt. I didn’t care so much about the traffic, but I definitely wanted lifetime maps. So – excellent Amazon service with delivery, amazingly fast. Right out of the box, it picked up a signal in my apartment – wow. Downloaded an updated map and it only took about 45 mins. total, no problems. Tried it out today. Screen is beautifully bright – I don’t actually need it on 100%. The voice is LOUD and clear, and again, I don’t need it full volume. Those two things alone totally delighted me. It is ready to navigate almost instantly when I turn it on, including in my carport, where my previous model never got a signal. It has very accurate and exhaustive small local POIs, which again impressed me, as the 205W still showed places that hadn’t existed for 5 years, and that was when it and the maps were new. The junction view/lane assist is easily visible and will be invaluable in unfamiliar areas. I haven’t actually seen the traffic alerts in use, but I have cruised the screens and checked the scans, and it seems as if it will be helpful. I know it can’t be perfect, but I’m sure it’ll be better than not having it at all. I’ve also had fun downloading different vehicles and voices. I just might be tempted to pay for Spongebob (most of the voices are free). SO happy I didn’t buy the unit I was originally intending to buy, and got this one instead with its great 5-inch screen. It’s a vast improvement on my 3 year old previous model. Garmin’s really started getting it right!

Over the past 10 months I had spent WAY too many hours reading reviews on GPS systems. Something would look like the best thing since sliced bread, then there would be reviews that the tech support was a nightmare, maps were outdated, etc. I liked the bigger size and the way this looked (the Interchange graphics especially)and was going out of state in February, so I had to make a decision. At the time, there were only a few reviews. On the day I prepared to order this Garmin 1450 there was negative review. I thought “Oh, great…”, but ordered it anyway, totally overwhelmed & frustrated with the whole endeavor. It has truly been a delight. My husband has had a low-tech Garmin for years & I never liked it. My son has a Tom-Tom, friends have Magellans, etc. We found restaurants, every location we needed, all effortlessly. I was afraid to do the review immediately, for fear it would die in the future, so I have waited 3 months. All is good! The only negative thing I might include is we did need to “reboot” twice on hot days when it was on the dash – I assume because it got hot. The reboot takes only a few seconds & it never happened when I left it sitting on its Friction Mount on the gearshift mound (out of the sun). I am truly quite pleased & grateful that I haven’t had problems. I hope whatever you select turns out to be such a successful experience!

I was skeptical about buying a new product with no reviews but after using it a few times I think I did the right thing. It worked right out of the box and although it would not accept my map update code it did it anyway so I guess the code is not needed if you have the lifetime update model. It comes with a car charger and a USB cable to connect to a PC and also uses the USB’s 5 volt power to charge, so you don’t need to buy the home charger if you want to do it this way. When connecting to USB you have the option to make a computer connection or just charge. Today I used it to go to a place that I have been before and it directed me to a way I didn’t know about that was a few less miles than my usual route. The spoken directions are clear and easy to understand. On major roads it knows the speed limit and shows both your actual speed and the limit, you can choose to be notified with a tone that you select if you get a little heavy with your right foot. The screen is big enough to use a finger to select menu options and type, on my last GPS I had to use a stylus due to it’s small size. The only thing that I wish it did but doesn’t is when you approach the destination it does not say which side of the street it’s on, I found this useful with my Garmin so that you know which lane to be in. So far that’s my only gripe.

just received my new GPS today, plugged it into my mac, and installed tomtom’s mac version of their home software. everything has worked well so far and the free map update installed fine. there are two main things that purchasers need to know:

1) space is very limited on the device. there is only 2 GB of internal flash memory and out of the box there was less than 50 MB free. the very first thing you should do is to delete voices in languages you don’t use. this will free up a couple/three hundred MB. they can get backed up to your computer so you could always put them back in the future. once a bit of space is freed up you’ll be able to update the device without issue. after removing spanish and french voices, running update which installed a new dave voice, and then installing the free map update i was left with 89 MB free. when i tried to run update before removing the voices, the unit warned me about lack of space and aborted without creating any further problems. maybe the mac version of home is more robust than the windows one in this respect.

2) the device only supports USB 1.1 transfers which max out at a bit over 1 MB/sec and can be slower. so doing a full backup or a map update will take quite a while (1-2 hours) and this is normal.

for me, those limitations are more than offset by the large, bright screen, text2speech capability, crowd-sourced map/route updates, and cheaper southern africa maps (we’re moving there soon). especially given the cheap sale price i found. i will provide updates as i put unit through paces on cross-country trip and then intercontinental move…..

I received a Garmin for Christmas a few years ago, and I badly needed to upgrade to something new. Although my old GPS got the job done, it didn’t say street names, it was really bulky, and you had to pay to update maps.

I got this as an Amazon Gold Box deal, and I am very pleased with my purchase. The design is sleek and so much less bulky than my old Garmin. It has so many neat features to it as well. With the Garmin, it was difficult to re-route for detours; with this one, you can choose specific parts of the route that you want to change. You can choose to have it figure out your drive for the shortest distance or the shortest time. It speaks the street names in advance and gives you a warning chime just before you need to make your turn.

Something really neat about this GPS is that it is partnered with AAA. I have AAA car insurance and can type in my member number. It’ll help me find AAA-approved car repair shops and places that I can use my AAA card at to get a discount. You don’t even need to be a member to access this information. You can also use the AAA information to search for tourist spots and attractions among a ton of other things.

I really am happy with this purchase. The GPS is a very nice unit, and the lifetime maps is an additional bonus- no more worries about things like my silly Garmin going out of date and not being able to find newer locations (happened several times!). I would highly recommend this product- it’s a very nice unit that has a lot of neat additions but isn’t too overly fancy.

I have had many GPS’s looking for the perfect GPS, none exists but this Magellan comes close even thought its semi bare bones, its a GPS and nothing more than a GPS. The lane assist features is what I look for in a GPS and this one with highway signs with arrows is OK but my Tom Tom with the big green arrows on the highway lanes is the best I’ve found. This Magellan has very nice features such as a ding dong or dong ding letting you know the very next turn is the one to take, this removes any confusion from when to turn. The verbal instructions are top notch and much more informative than any other GPS I’ve owned. Some minor items I would like to see would be a wider lane graphic for the road your travailing on, its very tiny as is. The turn arrow on the top left corner has a weird left turn arrow but you get used to it. The POI’s are extensive and the menu’s are easy to navigate, lots of great information included on this unit. This GPS is a basic model and not a lot of bells and whistles but it has all of the important features like detours and street avoidance at your fingertips while traveling. All in all if I could only have one GPS unit I guess its this one although I’d love to combine some Tom Tom features with this Magellan, now that would be one great GPS.

I recently installed this head unit in my 2005 Honda Pilot to replace an ailing stock navigation unit/ stereo. What drew me to this unit was the customization, iPod/iPhone integration, customization of backlit buttons (I know, lame) and ease of use. This unit did not let me down in any of those areas. Upon first using after being installed, there is a period of time that you will have to spend customizing all of the settings. Many other reviews noted that the Bluetooth setup was un-intuitive; I agree as I found myself yelling at the Nav unit trying to sync Bluetooth. However, once synced, the unit digested all of the contacts and made crystal clear phone calls. While on the topic of Bluetooth, ensure you know that the setting for mute while on a phone call can be adjusted. By default it still plays a little music while on a call- you can completely mute the music while on a call.

The iPod/iPhone integration is great. The unit allows you to control your iDevice from the head unit or give control to the iDevice- a welcomed feature when many companies lock out the iDevice in favor of controlling the song selection through the head unit. Some people complain of not having voice control- get over it, I have it in my 2011 Infiniti G37 and it is un deniably one of the best in the business, yet entering by hand is just as fast. Ensure when you get this head unit installed you ask for the “bypass” which allows you to use navigation functions while driving. The screen is very fast, pressing buttons are quick and responsive. Everything is quite snappy. I kept my stock speakers so I cannot comment on the sound quality…. One of the best features of the unit is what many don’t talk about. The image that is displayed with the “Destination, Phone and Settings” can also show shortcuts. You can choose what shortcuts you want on that page which makes navigating through menus a thing of the past! Very easy to edit and use! Some complain of poor radio reception, I too am experiencing that, I took it back to the installer and the reception is still sub-par. One other reason I bought this unit was because of the actual volume knob, just know that the knob is miniature and is a little tricky to use with big fingers. You might be just as well of with buttons.

Overall, I HIGHLY recommend this unit. Its just great.

Pros: Easy to use, responsive, quick, great iDevice integration, excellent backup camera/ phone integration.

Cons: Sub-par radio reception.

I really don’t understand why a few people gave this unit such a bad review. I am extremely happy with my unit. It does so many things. I love two features the best. the first one is when you go to the navigation system and plot in a course it gives you 6 different ways of getting there, the second thing that i love it that i can play movies from my flash drive. I haven’t quite figured out how to play all movies but i can play many movies from my flash drive. That is the greatest thing. I really don’t care if it posts the speed limit on my nab screen. It gets me from point A to point B. The colors on my movies are brilliant. It looks fantastic. it also looks the stock radio. I highly recommend this unit.

My review is going to be geared to those who have owned previous Garmin units, and perhaps have several year old models. I have had a Street Pilot c550 and a 205W. I was never happy with either the screen brightness or the volume on the Street Pilot. When I bought the 205W it was a new model and promised a very bright screen and loud directions – it had neither. Still, I used it until about two months ago, when for no reason it suddenly dumped all my saved destinations. Swell. I figured it was time for a new unit, and I wanted Lane Assist and Junction View. Was originally going to buy another unit that has the feature where it will help you get back to your parked car, but that unit isn’t going to be available for an unknown period of time, so I settled on the 1450lmt. I didn’t care so much about the traffic, but I definitely wanted lifetime maps. So – excellent Amazon service with delivery, amazingly fast. Right out of the box, it picked up a signal in my apartment – wow. Downloaded an updated map and it only took about 45 mins. total, no problems. Tried it out today. Screen is beautifully bright – I don’t actually need it on 100%. The voice is LOUD and clear, and again, I don’t need it full volume. Those two things alone totally delighted me. It is ready to navigate almost instantly when I turn it on, including in my carport, where my previous model never got a signal. It has very accurate and exhaustive small local POIs, which again impressed me, as the 205W still showed places that hadn’t existed for 5 years, and that was when it and the maps were new. The junction view/lane assist is easily visible and will be invaluable in unfamiliar areas. I haven’t actually seen the traffic alerts in use, but I have cruised the screens and checked the scans, and it seems as if it will be helpful. I know it can’t be perfect, but I’m sure it’ll be better than not having it at all. I’ve also had fun downloading different vehicles and voices. I just might be tempted to pay for Spongebob (most of the voices are free). SO happy I didn’t buy the unit I was originally intending to buy, and got this one instead with its great 5-inch screen. It’s a vast improvement on my 3 year old previous model. Garmin’s really started getting it right!

Just bought this GPS from Amazon and I’m having no problems with it at all. No sure why others have a problem with the speaker but it sounds fine to me. I bought this to replace my Nuvi 350 and it’s a major upgrade. The menus are much nicer and I like the Speed Limit display. I did have a little trouble with the bluetooth. After pairing my iPhone the “Phone” icon disappeared from my GPS. It didn’t seem to recognize my iPhone anymore. I went to the Garmin website, downloaded the 2.70 upgraded software for this unit (which has fixes for the speaker and bluetooth), did the pairing again, and now it works fine. I would definitely recommend this unit. Anyone who’s having problems should download the latest software for this GPS from the Garmin website.
